We are a few short weeks from our big day. We want to start off by thanking each of you for your willingness to come to a destination wedding. We know this is a big ask of guests and want to let each of you know how much it means to us. Our goal for this wedding is to bring all our amazing family and friends together to enjoy a vacation with many laughs and new memories. Our wedding will take place on December 21, 2021. This will also be our Twelve-year anniversary! Each of you have contributed special moments throughout those years.

We recently visited the Hyatt Zilara Cancun to finalize our wedding details. We are confident everyone will LOVE this hotel and have an opportunity to enjoy the Mexico sunshine for a few days. We learned a few things on our recent trip and want to share a few reminders as we all prepared for this trip.

First date & Proposal

Days Until Our Wedding

Vince:

The year was 2009, we were in our 20's - playing volleyball and having the time of our lives with many of you.

We were great friends before our first date. I remember being uncertain about going on a date because I didn't want it to ruin a great friendship. With a little nudging from a few friends (you know who you are), I agreed to go on a first date. We had dinner at Boogaloo, in St. Louis, then went to see 'It's Complicated' with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. It felt very natural.

Lee:

It's been 84 years......it hasn't been that long, but it's been over a decade. Its funny I can remember some things so clearly and other things have a bit of haze to them.

I remember, with the encouragement of one of his best friends (Sara) over a conversation at Imo's pizza on Hampton, that I was going to ask him out on a date. Vince and I had been friends for sometime, and I slowly realized that I had feelings for him that went beyond the friendship. I can't remember how I asked him out, but I do remember picking him up at his high rise apartment on Delmar, and as he walked to the car he looked so handsome. We went to Boogaloo for some tapas, they had swings at the bar instead of stools! We then went to the Wehrenberg theater in Des Peres. We saw the movie "Its Complicated." After the movie we sat in my oversized Buick Roadmaster and just talked about the movie, and dinner, and the possibility of two friends becoming more. I felt anxious, nervous, excited, smitten, and hopeful that it would turn into something special.

First Date

Vince:

He had NO CLUE! In his defense, we had been together for 10 years. In my defense, it wasn't legal when we started dating.

We planned an amazing trip to Australia and Hawaii at the end of 2019. I bought the ring beforehand but was unsure of when and how I wanted to propose. I thought about proposing during the Sydney Bridge climb. I decided against that for fear of getting on one knee, Lee being shocked with dramatic hand gestures and having the ring drop into Sydney Harbor.

We flew to Hawaii for a few days to end our trip. I proposed during a late night walk on the beach - just the two of us. It was 10 years in the making and the best decision I've ever made.

Lee:

I had no clue! Lets see, we had just finished this amazing once in a lifetime trip to Australia (we got to hold koalas!). After that trip on the way home we decided to have an extended layover in Hawaii. We were enjoying the big island and one night we went to dinner and then decided to walk along the beach. It was dark and we were walking under the stars. I spotted a large rectangular shaped jetty or levy that one of the resorts set up to keep the water calm in front of their hotel. It was made up of huge sand bags that were probably 8ft by 4ft and stretched out into the water about 50ft before slowly tapering into the ocean. I suggested that we walk out to the end of the sandbags and sit and watch the stars and water. We just sat and talked about our trip we had just taken, how fortunate we felt, and how beautiful the evening was. I got up to walk closer to the edge of the jetty where the water was splashing quite high, I was thinking this is my moment to act out my Ariel fantasy, when Vince called my name and I turned around and he was on one knee with a ring out in his hands. He started to say the sweetest things, so of course I began to ugly cry. I stood him up and we just hugged each other for the longest time. I was still crying like a crazy person, so the people on the beach must
have thought something had gone completely right, or terribly wrong. I am not sure how long we stood there hugging each other, but it was the only time in my life that everything seemed to float away, the ocean, the beach, the stars, it was just us, I don't know if there ever has been a more perfect moment.

Food Selection

Please no gifts! We recognize that traveling to this wedding is a large expense and after 12 years have collected more than enough things to start this marriage. We are just wanting everyone to have a great time and be prepared for a few pictures with us.

What to wear

We are asking that our guests wear white for the wedding.

It is ok to wear khaki pants or shorts. For reference, we will not be wearing sports jackets or ties. Keep in mind that it will likely be in the mid to high 80s to start and cool into the 60s or 70s when the sun goes down. You might consider a light jacket or cover for the evening. Also, please wear comfortable shoes – we have a lot of dancing to do. Nice sandals are perfectly fine to wear.

Covid testing at the hotel

Currently, people need a negative covid test to get out of Mexico. Vaccinated guests will also need a negative covid test but can have the test done 72 hours prior departure. Unvaccinated guests need a negative covid test 24 hours of departure. You should make your testing reservation when checking in, reservations are REQUIRED.  These restrictions might change between now and December. There is a $30 fee for testing if you're staying less than 3 days at the resort. This is subject to change, please request information when you arrive.

Covid 19 Information

We are still dealing with this pandemic. We hope we are all back to a pre-covid world of travel sooner rather than later. With that being said, there are still a lot of important details to consider when traveling right now.

Our main concern is everyone is safe and comfortable. As nurses, we are encouraging everyone to speak with their doctors and consider the vaccination. Weather permitting, we will be holding our entire wedding outdoors. We will not be requiring masks but strongly encourage anyone who prefers to wear one to do so. We do not know everyone’s vaccination status, and will not be asking, but we do know most of our guests have been vaccinated.

The hotels in Cancun are still adhering to Covid-19 Policies. Here are a few things we noticed at the Hyatt Zilara Cancun:

The hotel is currently offering complimentary Covid-19 testing for any guest staying 3 nights or longer. We stayed less than 3 days on our recent trip and were charged $30 per test (much cheaper than other hotels). PLEASE MAKE A RESERVATION the day you arrive! You need to set an appointment IN ADVANCE and will need to bring your passport. Based on your vaccination status, you will need to set a time to be tested 1-3 days before your departure date. This is important as the US is currently requiring a negative test, regardless of vaccination status. You will be emailed your results and be asked for this document at the airport. There is a printer by the ATM machines for anyone wanting to print this document before they leave the hotel.

You will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon arrival and at many of the restaurants. They will also take your departure on arrival and departure. Some of the restaurants have clear dividers and fewer tables to allow them to space guests apart 6 feet or more. Please keep this in mind as there might be a short wait time for dinner some nights. The Hibachi and Fine Dining (extra charge for this one) were the only restaurants that needed a reservation. I would encourage people to put reservations on the day you arrive if they want to visit either of these.

The hotel staff will be wearing masks and guests are encouraged to wear masks while indoors – unless you are sitting down to eat or drink something. All rooms are cleaned thoroughly and the rooms we saw had a room service window for delivery. I also believe they will not be coming every day for cleaning unless you request it.

Alcohol is served 11 am – 11 pm at the bars. The breakfast restaurant does have cocktail service (Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, etc.) for those that might want/need it. Also, the hotel is currently not stocking rooms with liquor but does have beers in the fridge. This is to minimize any large gatherings per Covid-19 restrictions in the Hotel Zone.
